Important Update for Prepaid Electricity Customers: TID Rollover and KRN2 Compliance

All prepaid providers worldwide will implement the TID(Token Identifier) rollover with a deadline of 24 November 2024. This change is crucial to ensure the continued functionality of your prepaid electricity meter. Here’s what you need to know and do:

What is TID Roll-Over?

The code generated when you purchase electricity is on a base date of 1994. This system's number range will be exhausted by November 24,2024. To prevent any issues with topping up your meter and to ensure it continues to function properly, your pre-paid meter needs to be reconfigured.

What if I have tokens that have not yet been entered?

Any unused tokens must be entered before November 24, 2024,as old tokens will not be accepted after the change. Any units on your meter will still be available after the change.

How will the change be done?

With your token purchase on or after July 2024, you will receive a token with three codes that must be entered in the sequence printed on the token.

Who is affected by this?

This change affects every pre-paid STS meter globally.

Steps to follow when entering 3 token vouchers:

1.    Ensure all previously bought vouchers are entered before starting the process.

2.    Enter the first token on your meter and wait for it to be accepted before continuing.

3.    Enter the second token on your meter and wait for it to be accepted before continuing.

4.    Enter the last token (this is your recharge token).

You must be aware: that if you do not enter the key change by or before November 24, 2024, your meter will stop working.

Urgent Call for KRN2 Compliance

Several urgent calls to all prepaid electricity meter customers have been made by several municipalities to ensure that their meters are converted to Key Revision Number 2 (KRN2) compliance by November 24, 2024. The conversion, which should be done manually by prepaid meter users, is important to ensure the continued provision of electricity. If customers do not convert their meters by November 24, 2024, they will be unable to load electricity tokens after the conversion date.

The City of Tshwane has a fleet of 357,155 prepaid meters on the vending system that are KRN2-ready. So far, the number of prepaid meters that are vending on KRN2 is 230,032. A total of 127,123 (36%) prepaid meters are not vending tokens on KRN2 because customers have not converted these meters.

The consequence for the customers of the outstanding 127,123 meters is that if the conversion does not take place by November 24, 2024, they will not be able to load electricity tokens generated on KRN2.

TID Rollover – The Time is Now

After 20:24 on November 24, 2024, meters will no longer accept electricity tokens unless upgraded to Key Revision Number 2(KRN2).

To check your meter KRN status, you’ll need to enter the following codes based on your meter make, identified by the first two digits on your meter number:

If the meter displays 1, then you need to update your meter and collect a set of Key change tokens at your nearest provider or shop. Failure to upgrade your meter will prevent you from loading electricity tokens, rendering the meter inoperable.

Stay informed and ensure your meter is updated to avoid any disruptions in your electricity supply.
